What Poets Need to Know:
– You will need 2 poems prepared that are YOUR original works, we have our ways to know if they are yours or not. One of those poems should follow the posted prompt.
– The poems DO NOT have to be memorized but memorization is encouraged. There is a better chance of winning with memorized work!
– You may slam with the same poems each time you sign up if you do not win.
– We encourage your poems to stay under 4 minutes, however you will not be deducted any points if you do go over.
– NO props, costumes, help from an outside source or music (background or instruments).
Judging:
– We will ask 5 volunteers from the audience to judge.
– In some cases judges will be pre-requested and selected prior to the event (feel free to contact us if you want to judge!)
– The judges may not be related to the competitors.
– Each judge will score the poems on a scale from 0.0-10.0.
– The highest and lowest score will be thrown out and the middle 3 scores will be added up. Please see the run down for the elimination round break down.
– Judges are only asked to score according to how THEY feel about the poems.
Final words:
Just remember that the judges are the one’s who control your fate, they may not relate, they may not understand your poems, they may not value your opinions and they may not know a thing about poetry so don’t take it so serious, just HAVE FUN!
